JADS master students present network research at NetSci 2025
Posted on
At JADS, students don’t just study data science. They apply it to real-world networks. This month, two of our MSc students showcased their work at NetSci 2025 in Maastricht, a leading conference that brings together experts from physics, computer science, social sciences, and beyond to explore the intricacies of network science.
About NetSci 2025
Held from June 2 to 6 at MECC Maastricht, NetSci 2025 is the flagship event of the Network Science Society. The conference fosters interdisciplinary collaboration, attracting over 800 researchers and practitioners worldwide to discuss advancements in network science.
The project
Exploring the European professional football inter-league transfer market
Students: Orçun Karabıçak, Sinan Dede
Supervisors: Claudia Zucca, Steven van den Oord
Orçun and Sinan investigated player transfers among Europe’s top football leagues using social network analysis. Their study revealed that clubs participating in UEFA tournaments and those with diverse nationalities are more active in inter-league transfers, highlighting the roles of prestige and cultural diversity in transfer dynamics.
“Presenting at NetSci was a great opportunity to step outside the classroom, share our work with an international audience, and learn from leading researchers. What I valued most was the chance to work on a topic I personally care about, and to experience the motivation that comes from engaging with something that truly matters to you. It made the entire research process more meaningful and rewarding.”
Orçun Karabıçak, Master student
“Presenting at NetSci 2025 was an exciting experience. It gave me the opportunity to connect with researchers from different disciplines and receive valuable feedback on our work. Working with network data taught me how complex systems like football transfers can be understood through patterns and structure. It made me appreciate how data science can uncover hidden dynamics in areas we all care about.”
Sinan Dede, Master student
What it’s really like to study at JADS
At JADS, you’re not just crunching numbers in a lecture hall. You’re diving into real data, tackling projects that matter, and sometimes, presenting your findings on international stages like NetSci. Whether you’re analyzing football transfers or exploring other real-world networks, the work is hands-on, collaborative, and impactful.
Professor Claudia Zucca on the value of student involvement in such conferences: “Netsci is an outstanding international conference where researchers from all around the world present cutting-edge ideas and innovations about network analysis. For young data science students, this is an invaluable opportunity to learn about the real application of their work and get inspired, meet their future role models and employers. The Netsci acceptance rate is quite low, and, amazingly, their work was accepted for presentation.”
